Temporary Changes In the Law Due to COVID-19

March 21st, 2020 by Tiffany Hughes

During these uncertain times of mounting confusion, The Law Office of Tiffany M. Hughes is dedicated to providing people with as much clarity and transparency as possible. Therefore, we have decided to shed some light on some of the most notable temporary changes in the law in Chicago, Illinois due to the coronavirus pandemic. First, as you may read in a more detailed article on our website, most court systems in the State of Illinois have temporarily shut down as a way to assist in stopping the spread of the virus.

Evictions

Additionally, no one in Illinois may be evicted from their home by the Sheriff’s Department from March 21, 2020 until April 7, 2020 pursuant to Governor Pritzker’s mandatory stay-at-home order, The Governor’s order goes on to mention specifically that evictions cannot be conducted because of a tenant’s inability to pay their rent, although the payment of rent is still required.

Ticketing, Towing and Debt Collectors

On March 18, 2020, Mayor Lightfoot announced that in the City of Chicago, debt collections, ticketing and towing practices were to be suspended until April 30, 2020. This means that tickets for compliance-related violations like parking, booting of vehicles, ticket doubling, and license suspensions are temporarily suspended.

Tax Filings

Finally, in regards to taxes, the deadline for filing of federal income taxes has been extended from April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020. For Illinois, the Illinois Department of Revenue has waived all penalties and interest that would have been imposed on late Sales Tax payments from qualified taxpayers in the interest of assisting restaurant establishments that are feeling the effects of the halt on their patron’s ability to dine-in.
